World Music of Nana is a unique ensemble that blends musical elements from across the world. Nana has established herself as one of the foremost composers of new world music today. Since the mid 1980s Nana has been touring and presenting her original music to audiences world wide in such prestigious venues as Symphony Space, the Lincoln Center, and the Metropolitan in New York City. She has also performed at the Kennedy Center, at the Montreux Jazz festival, at the first Cultural Capital of Europe festival and at the International Music Day festival. Most recently she appeared with her ensemble at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City featuring David Liebman on saxophone and Ustad Sultan Khan on sarangi.
Nana sings in various languages and plays Indian Sitar, Byzantine Bouzouki and Aboriginal didgeridoo. Ustad Sultan Khan performs on sarangi and sings. Caryn Heilman of LiquidBody Dance sings and plays Sufi frame drums Daf and Tar. Also added to the ensemble is Dawn Avery on cello and vocals, Mary Ann McSweeney on bass and Hanif Khan, who is a member of Ustad Sultan Khan's family, on tablas. At various times during the performance Caryn, a former member of the Paul Taylor Dance Company, dances in fluid resonant movement in response to the music with projected video images.
World Music of Nana ensemble offer workshops in world music, classical Indian vocals and percussion jazz improvisation and LiquidBody movement which is a form of fitness utilizing the highly evolved fluid systems of the body. No prior experience is necessary to participate in these workshops. They range from 45 minutes to an afternoon session.
